The cross was where Jesus died for the sins on mankind. It is a reminder that death comes to us all but through him there is hope for salvation. Think about it. Jesus died on a cross, therefore making it important to Christians. In addition to this in Galatians 2:20 Christians are reminded that to be a Christ-follower involves death to self, and in this sense all true believers identify in a personal way with the cross of Christ. No-one ever got off one alive. But without the glorious resurrection , the cross would be utterly meaningless and faith 'in vain'. The whole point of the cross and the resultant 'death' in the life of the believer is to then 'rise' to a new life as Christ did, both figuratively in this life and then actually at the end of all things.
= Answer == The sign of the cross is as explained, a sign of the saviors death and His sacrifice for all mankind. So many Christians put their faith in His death. As a Latter Day Saint I believe in a living Christ, that through His resurrection all may be made alive. His death was inevitable brought about by mankind, though they did not kill , for He gave up the Ghost of His own free will. His resurrection was brought about by His Father, the great Elohim.
The central figure in Christianity is Jesus Christ. Christians believe that the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus constitutes the atonement which is paying the debt of the sins of those who believe and call upon His name for forgiveness.
Christ was crucified on a cross. It was a painful, tortuous way of death in those days. The cross symbol to many Christians, reminds them of the sacrifice of the Savior and helps them keep the Jesus in their minds and hearts.
Some Christians, such as the Mormons (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) do not use the symbol of the cross to remember Jesus. To them, the cross is a symbol of His death, but it is the glorious resurrected Christ which they want to keep in their hearts.
The cross symbol can traced back 2000 years pre-Christ and used by non-Christian cultures as a "magic" to give protection or good fortune. Many Bible Scholars have agreed that Jesus was put to death on an upright stake not two pieces of timber placed at any angle. True Christians wholeheartedly believe that Jesus death provides us with an opportunity for deliverance; however, having a symbol of the tool used to end his life here on earth can lead to it becoming an object of devotion or worship, which is idolatry. As a result, true Christians refrain from using the cross in their worship.
