Many Buddhists can go their entire lives without ever seeing, let along using, a singing bowl. The implication from this is that the singing bowls are not all that important to all Buddhists.
However many Buddhists meditate and some of these use the singing bowl as a source of white noise to block out other interfering sounds.
A smaller group see the bowls as "mystic" instruments to help them reach higher levels of insight.
A smaller group (again) sees the vibrations of the bowls as a magical medicine. This group includes both Buddhists and new agers. This group claims the bowls are tuned to the various chakras and focus energies towards these centers.
The major focus of Zen Buddhism is on practices designed to lead to awakening (spiritual enlightenment, kensho, satori). Zazen, chanting, prostrations, and so on all are designed to facilitate awakening and then to deepen or expand it..
