Answer 1
Islam is never considered a scary religion. It is the current biased media and some non Muslims who try to propagate false and scary ideas about Islam for more than one reason:
It is very amazing that for any terrorist act by non Muslims (Jewish or Christian) issued by the terrorist citizenship and by his faith or religion while if the terrorist act is done by a Muslim then it propagated by the terrorist religion not citizenship to convince people that Islam is a religion of terrorism although it is not.
Islam calls for peace, no compulsion in religion, mutual respects, securing human rights without racism and discrimination, working for the benefit of mankind and environment, and forgiveness and tolerance.

Answer 2
"Scary" is in the eye of the beholder and connotes no objective reason why something is fearful. Many in the West are scared of Islam for no other reason than that is something with which they have no personal experience but seems powerful, looming, and growing. Often, when people are confronted with the dark, they would rather yell scream and point rather than march forward and reach the light.
There are, however, legitimate or quasi-legitimate fears held by certain groups as concerns the influx of Muslims into their countries. The two most central ones in Europe concern the freedoms of speech/religion and the crime rates.
As concerns the two freedoms, they are interrelated. Europe has gone through centuries of war where one group of Europeans would murder another group for the crime of having a slightly different form of Christianity as their dominant religion. Over the centuries these wars brought about in Europe an acceptance that the only way they could survive in the long-term is everyone had the right to say whatever they wished and believe whatever they wished. Many Muslim immigrants to Europe come from countries with strong blasphemy laws. When they arrive in Europe, they demand that society be built to conform to their sensitivities. Muslims in Britain have called for a ban on teaching the "Three Little Pigs" to pre-schoolers because it offends their moral decency to have pigs in a story. More bothersome than that, however, are when Muslims protest and threaten the murder (and sometimes actually go through with it) against non-Muslim and Muslim activists that hold opinions contrary to their own. This, of course, fails to mention scholars like Anjam Choudry in the United Kingdom who actively urges the Islamic community (whether or not they listen to him is something else) to overthrow the British Parliament and claim that country for Islam (and of course make all British into Dhimmi). It needs to be noted, however, that this fervor often dies in the European-born generations. Swiss-born Tariq Ramadan urges French and Swiss Muslims to take part in the democracy of those countries as respectable and honest citizens with a true understanding of Islam. However, yelling and shouting of the few drown out the good behavior of the many.
As concerns crime rates, most Muslim immigrants to Europe come from poor areas and end up in slums in Europe. As is natural, poor communities tend to have more crime, making these newcomers unwelcome. Furthermore, increases in crime tend to scare European nationals. Tariq Ramadan has claimed quite forcefully that France has failed its Muslim population for not helping them escape a cycle of poverty. In his opinion, these Muslims are the victims of circumstance and a system which makes getting out of poverty difficult for Muslims.
No Absolutely Not. Islam Is a Religion. Islam Means Peace
