Visions are often reported as having been seen by people in the distant past or far away, meaning that there is little likelihood of the story being proven right or, for that matter, refuted. Visions, such as at Fatima or Lourdes, that have occurred to peasants or young children in backward, rural areas can readily be discounted for a number of reasons, but some have been reported by members of religious orders and we either accept the sincerity of these dedicated people or believe their stories are somewhat elaborated for a worthy cause.
I know that alleged visions are still reported, but do not receive wide coverage because they are invariably dismissed by investigators. William A. Christian, Jr. (Apparitions in Late Medieval and Renaissance Spain) says that even since 1930, there have been hundreds of reported episodes throughout Europe, particularly in Italy. Usually, the Virgin Mary appears unexpectedly to just one or two young children, poor peasants or members of religious orders. Robert A. Scott (Miracle Cures) says the typical pattern is for children to report strange sightings and the adults to tell them what they had seen. As word of the vision spreads, the identity of the apparition becomes established as fact. The children themselves also retrospectively 'realise' the true identity of the figure in their visions.

To interpret Mary's visions and accusations, it is important to consider the historical and cultural context of the time she lived in. It is also crucial to take into account any personal or psychological factors that may have influenced her experiences. Consulting primary sources and expert analysis can provide a more comprehensive understanding of Mary's visions and accusations.
