Roman Catholic AnswerIt is called a Sedilia, and it really isn't "special" as in a Bishop's cathedra, it is just someplace for the priest to sit when listening to the readings, or for meditation after Holy Communion. It was already there in the catacombs where there was one stone seat at the side of the altar. The sedilia is placed at the apex of the sanctuary, facing the people, to draw attention to the fact that he is presiding over the Eucharist. In the new Order of the Mass, he is also to say the opening and closing prayers "from the chair" (although, NOT sitting in it at that time!).
