We need gods so that the people that do not know who they are and what they want out of life can follow a god so that they feel like they belong somewhere in this world. The gods are there to provide support to those who feel like they don't belong.

The gods of which people often speak are man-generated substitutes for the true God of Heaven. Yet they indicate a yearning of the heart for favor from a higher being. If he chooses to philosophically deny God's existence, he will be drawn to worship someone or something else, such as himself, a famous person (scientist, celbrity, etc.), money, possessions or success. The scripture instructs Christian believers to "mortify (put to death) therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry." Colossians 3:5. Desire for another's wealth, wife, or position is the false worship of idolatry.

The propensity to worship, even if false, leads to the Biblical fact that man was created by God, and fell in sin from His grace. The Lord told the Israelites: "I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Exodus 20:2,3; Deuteronomy 5;6,7. He who brought them out of bondage wanted them to only trust in and serve Him.

When Jeremiah chastised Israel for going after other gods, he indicated that the gods of the nations are false: "Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods?" Jer. 2:11. God sought to restore Israel, and seeks to restore all mankind to His grace. Just as He brought them out of slavery in Egypt to Pharaoh He desires to free us from slavery to sin. For the one who trusts in Christ, the promise is: "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace." Romans 6:14.

Most people desire to go to heaven, or something better than the trouble in this life. Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6. Peter said of Christ: "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Acts 4:12. The Bible is consistent in showing that Jesus Christ, by His sacrifice for our sins on the Cross, is the only way to eternal life or heaven. The Scriptures tell us that we need to trust in Him as our Savior from sin and its consequences.

Mankind are very susceptible to believing in mythical beings, forces and signs in favour of accepting reality, sometimes as a comfort, and sometimes just due to our Biology, though evolution (see 'The God Delusion'). The people who invent these gods by choice do so for numerous reasons. Firstly, to keep their people in line. If you do bad things, you'll go to hell or the god will kill you or your crops will die, or something like that. If you're good, you'll be rewarded. After you die of course.

The belief in god(s) and their associated belief structures' rules and required standards of behavior are required for those who meet Einstein's definition of being "in a poor way" without the internal capacity to determine the most advantageous behavior to belong to a functioning society. Belief is like a hearing aid or a crutch to help these people function where they have no intrinsic ability.

The simple truth is that God created you; in creating you, He created you with an inner need for Him, which since that need is Infinite, can never be fulfilled by anything finite (such as sex, drugs, money, etc.) but only by Him.

Our God-given soul withers when the awareness of God is neglected and we fail to develop the relationship with Him, which should include obedience, prayer, etc.

Awareness of God, and a relationship with Him, can provide:1) The fortitude to overcome peer pressure.

2) Self-discipline and contentment (whose lack has led our society to epidemic obesity, drunkenness, depression and ennui, divorce rates, violence etc.).

3) An additional layer of education, maturity and circumspection.

4) Emotional fortitude, helping one overcome hardships.

5) A sense of identity and a relevant community, with its ambiance and mutual help.

6) A life and a sense of purpose.
