Monks for education for noble children. Nuns for nursing sick.
Monks and nuns contributed to the Middle Ages in many ways. One way was to care for the sick and poor. Another way was to build schools and teach at schools.
Monks are male members of a religious community who typically live in a monastery, while nuns are female members who live in a convent. Monks often focus on contemplation and prayer, while nuns may have a broader range of activities including teaching, caring for the sick, and social work. Both monks and nuns take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
Generally speaking, monks and nuns lived in monasteries or convents, and did very much the same sorts of things other people did in terms of raising food, cleaning, cooking, and so on. They did not have families, but spent their time in prayer and devotion instead. Many monks and nuns worked at specialized jobs, and there was a wide range of these from tending the sick and making medicine, to making cheese or wine, copying books, singing in choirs, educating people, and providing inns for pilgrims and other travelers, protecting travelers on the road, and even fighting wars. There are links below.
Monks and nuns often served the community by becoming educators and teaching school. They also worked in hospitals as nurses or aids, led prayer services at churches or homes, and even made some products to sell.
Life in a monasteries was very quiet. Monks and nuns (residents of the monasteries) would wake up at 5am in the morning to say their prayers. Some monks and nuns would take care of the sick and old people, some would copy out precious or rare manuscript. They would sleep i dormitories with other monks or nuns. They should only have a mattress, blanket and pillow on their beds. They should not get married or have sexual relationships, and are supposed to only eat simple food (no meat) and wear simple clothes. They should help educate the children and should give shelter and food to travellers. They should ALL live as POOR people. However, monasteries were given lots of money and land by rich barons and they were very wealthy. Monks and nuns used money for their own pleasures and ate what they wanted! That is why the Dissolution of the Monasteries began...
It was simply known as the infirmary.
Monasteries were used primarily as religious sites where monks and nuns lived a communal life dedicated to prayer, meditation, study, and service. They also served as centers of learning, providing education, healthcare, and hospitality to travelers. Monasteries played a significant role in preserving and transmitting knowledge, art, and culture during the medieval period.
When I am sick, I seek medical treatment from a healthcare provider such as a doctor or nurse. They are trained to diagnose and treat illnesses to help me recover.
