This was not Catherine McAulay's original intention. She had been left a large sum of money by her guardian and benefactor and with this she leased a property in Baggot Street Dublin on which to build a large house to be used for the purpose of meeting religious, social and educational needs of women and children. She was joined by other women interested in her work, the house became known as Mercy House, and finally they, as a community, decided theirs to become a new religious community, the Sisters of Mercy. The new religious community of women dedicated to the services of the poor was founded on the 12 December, 1831.
