Asoka, often written as Ashoka, had originally been a Hindu, a king and military leader who had been known for being ruthless and cruel to his enemies. But when he became a Buddhist, it seemed to change him for the better. He became committed to "Ahimsa," or non-injury of other beings. He also became committed to spreading Buddhism throughout his kingdom, and is considered a hero in Buddhist history for helping that religion to grow.
