The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) began in the eastern United States and tried for some time to be established there, but was forced further and further west by intolerance and persecution. Church headquarters was located in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois before finding peace and religious freedom in Utah in 1847.

Today, there are about 1.3 million Mormons living in the eastern half of the United States.
