Jewish group prayer can take place anywhere 10 or more Jewish men amongst the Orthodox or 10 Jewish adults, male and/or female, for all other groups are gathered. This doesn't have to be in a structure built specifically for this purpose, in truth, it doesn't have to be in a building at all.
However, synagogues aren't just a place of worship. They're also places where Jews can gather for social events and to study.
