Peter (Simon) is the apostle referred to as the 'rock' based on Matthew 16:17-19. 17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
John 1:41, 42 - He [Andrew] first found his own brother Simon [Peter], and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, "You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas" (which is translated, A Stone). [NKJV]
The Catholic teaching believe this apostle to be Peter. Protestant teaching believe the Rock spoken about, is Jesus Christ Himself. A difference in bible interpretation.
Jesus Christ.
It was Peter. Peter knew who Jesus was, the Son of God.
He was first called Simon ,but Jesus changed the name to Peter meaning the rock.
The twelve apostles were chosen by Jesus to preach the Gospel. St. Paul was chosen to be the "rock" of the church. Jesus gave him the responsibility to build his church and to essentially recruit people to join.
Jesus is, of course, the rock, the foundation of the Church. However, in John 1:42, Jesus changes the Apostle Simon's name to Cephas, or Peter, a name which means "Rock". Now we know from scripture that Jesus is the Rock, or Cornerstone (1 Corinthians 10:4). Therefore, it can be assumed from this name change that Jesus is handing on to Peter what He Himself is, Rock. Once Christ ascended into Heaven, Peter became the new rock, foundation or earthly leader of the Church.

Peter when Jesus told him in Matthew 16. You will build my church over this rock.
There is an interpretation discussion about the phrase "built on the rock." Peter which means rock asked Jesus about theology and Jesus answered that this is what the church will be built upon. Some believe it is Peter that it is to built on and some believe it is Peter's theology.
the Pope is the visible head of the Catholic CHurch. He takes the place of Jesus on earth. The first Pope was St. Peter. Jesus appointed him pope when he said to Peter:"On this rock I will build my church." Peter Means rock.
Because he would use Peter as a "strong foundation" to build up the churchNote: Actually this belief is common especially among Catholics, but a careful study of the words Jesus used shows Jesus was referring to himself as the Rock. The name Peter means stone or little rock. The Christian church has Christ as it's foundation, otherwise it wouldn't be a "Christian" church, if Peter was the foundation it would be the "Peterian" church.
Jesus told Peter that he was his rock and on him Jesus would build his church. Peter was the first Pope.
