from the Catholic Encyclopedia:
In the New Testament she is mentioned among the women who accompanied Christ and ministered to Him (Luke 8:2-3), where it is also said that seven devils had been cast out of her (Mark 16:9). She is next named as standing at the foot of the cross (Mark 15:40; Matthew 27:56; John 19:25; Luke 23:49). She saw Christ laid in the tomb, and she was the first recorded witness of the Resurrection.
History is not really clear as to her role in the life of Jesus. But it does seem that she was a devoted follower that seemed to travel with him at times. The idea that they were more than this must be disreguared for many reasons, not the least being that Jesus was sinless and any type of extramarital relationship would not have been possible. And it is very unlikely that they were married. In all the accounts of Christ there has never been a single word that points to a married Jesus. He had a mission and He would not have let anything derail those plans.
ANSWER
Mary Magdalene was a reformed sinner who then became a female disciple of Christ. She was NOT Jesus' lover or wife - that is a blasphemous supposition by Dan Brown that he will have to answer to Christ for.
Mary Magdalene was a follower of Jesus Christ, who had come into contact with Jesus and he expelled seven demons from her (Luke 8:2). This caused her to put faith in him as the Messiah and she became a disciple. Along with other disciples, she accompanied him during his travels when he went from "city to city and from village to village, preaching and declaring the good news of the kingdom of God." (Luke 8:1-3)
She is best remembered because she was one of the women noted for being present when Jesus was executed and had a part in the preparation of his body for burial, and when Jesus was resurrected.
