Salat, the formal Islamic prayer, is lead by an imam. The imam should be the male worshiper present who knows the most verses of the Qur'an, is the most knowledgeable about religion, or who is known to be the most pious. If women pray in congregation without men, a woman may lead the prayer.
The prayers / salat is led by an IMAM or any learned person, who has knowledge of the Koran and Islam. Age is not the parameter. Anyone, who knows how to offer prayer, can lead the prayers for the masses.
