Originally, hell was for Satan and his fallen angels. All that changed when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and were banished from the Eden. Man's fall from grace left him in an impossible situation. Christ died so humans still have the hope of heaven. But God has to separate His faithful saints from the wicked, like taking rotten apples from a barrel of good fruit. The rotton fruit, if left, would spread the rot to the perfect ones. So those deserving paradise will live in mansions while unrepentant sinners will spend eterinty with the 'god of their own choice, Satan'. A permanent separation from all that is good.
