Gabriel was a high ranking messenger angel, but not the Archangel.

Besides Michael (the Archangel), his is the only other angel mentioned by name in The Bible.

See attached link for a nice discussion on Gabriel.

He is mentioned in the following scriptures:

(Daniel 8:15, 16) 15 Then it came about that, while I myself, Daniel, was seeing the vision and seeking an understanding, why, look! there was standing in front of me someone in appearance like an able-bodied man. 16 And I began to hear the voice of an earthling man in the midst of the U′lai, and he proceeded to call out and say: "Ga′bri·el, make that one there understand the thing seen."

(Daniel 9:21) 21 and [while] I was yet speaking in the prayer, why, the man Ga′bri·el, whom I had seen in the vision at the start, having been made weary with tiredness, was arriving by me at the time of the evening gift offering.

(Luke 1:18, 19) . . ." 19 In reply the angel said to him: "I am Ga′bri·el, who stands near before God, and I was sent forth to speak with you and declare the good news of these things to you.

(Luke 1:26) 26 In her sixth month the angel Ga′bri·el was sent forth from God to a city of Gal′i·lee named Naz′a·reth. . .

Here are some of the well-known angels in biblical tradition: Archangel Gabriel: Gabriel is one of the most prominent angels in the Bible. He is known as the messenger angel and is mentioned in the books of Daniel and Luke. Gabriel is said to have delivered important messages from God, including the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary about the birth of Jesus. Archangel Michael: Michael is another prominent archangel in the Bible. He is often depicted as a powerful warrior and is associated with protection and spiritual warfare. Michael is mentioned in the books of Daniel, Jude, and Revelation, where he is described as leading the angelic armies against the forces of evil. Lucifer/Satan: Although Lucifer is not explicitly referred to as an angel in the Bible, there are passages that suggest he was an angelic being who rebelled against God. He is commonly identified with Satan, the adversary of God and humanity. In the book of Ezekiel, a passage refers to a figure called "the shining one" or "day star" who fell from heaven. Seraphim: The seraphim are a high-ranking order of angels mentioned in the book of Isaiah. They are described as having six wings and are known for their role in worshiping and praising God. In Isaiah's vision, the seraphim are depicted as proclaiming the holiness of God and purifying the prophet. Cherubim: Cherubim are angelic beings often associated with the presence of God. They are described as having multiple wings and are mentioned in various parts of the Bible, including Genesis, Exodus, and Ezekiel. In the book of Genesis, cherubim are depicted as guarding the entrance to the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve were expelled. Archangel Raphael: Although Raphael is not mentioned by name in the canonical Bible, he plays a significant role in the book of Tobit, which is part of the Apocrypha. How and why do you use archangel in a sentence?

Archangels represent many things. In Qabalistic studies and in Hermetic studies, they represent parts of the Psyche, the emotional body, and much more. Calling on them in ritual invocation enhances those parts of the spiritual system. Angels or at least the representation of them precede the bible by a thousand years or more.
