The Apostle Paul reported visiting Jerusalem and meeting Peter and James, whom he described as pillars of the church in Jerusalem. He described James as the leader who made decisions on behalf of the Jerusalem church. Paul's own appreciation of his relationship with James and Peter seems to have been one of equality with James, while he saw himself as senior to Peter, for example admonishing Peter for not eating with the gentile Christians.

Acts of the Apostles, arguably reflecting a different Christian tradition, says that Peter was indeed the leader of the Christians after the death of Jesus.

A Christian tradition from the second century says that Peter went to Rome to lead the Christian community there, but Rome was not yet the centre of the Christian Church. In any case, Clement of Rome seems to have been unaware that Peter was ever in Rome.

Jesus was never head of a church; he was Jewish, and his followers were Jewish as well until long after his death.
