Isaiah recorded his prophecies in writing, which have come down to us today as the Old Testament book of Isaiah. His prophecies cut to the heart of Judah's troubles which were rooted in idoltry and corruption due to departure from God's ways.

He also offered a way out and hope for the future. He predicted the Babylonian exile and return under Cyrus, which is the main reason scholars think there must have been another author of the book.

According to some scholars, the Book of Isaiah was a composite work by authors now known as I Isaiah and II Isaiah, whose lives and experiences were separated by many decades.

Isaiah 1:1 introduces the book as the work of Isaiah, son of Amoz, who lived in the reigns of the Judahite kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. Because there were two authors of the book, this Isaiah is generally referred to as I Isaiah or First Isaiah. He would have lived in Jerusalem.

The Book of Isaiah omits the 150 year period from Hezekiah to the fall of Jerusalem and recommences with the Babylonian Exile. The anonymous author of this work is generally referred to as Second Isaiah. He would have lived, in exile, in or near Babylon.

The last thing he said in chapter 66:23 From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before me," says the Lord. 24 "And they will go out and look on the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; the worms that eat them will not die, the fire that burnt them will not be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind."

think about that.

Additional Comments:

Isaiah is best known for his unswerving faithfulness and his complete humility before God. Though there isn't much about the man's early life, his prophecies tell us much about his character and service to God, his country and mankind.

Most biblical scholars will speak about Isaiah's focus on his seemingly preoccupation with God's messianic salvation of Israel (all Tribes). However, they do note Isaiah did not gloss over the sins of his fellow countrymen. On the contrary, Isaiah consistently addressed the hedonism of Judah and the nation's lukewarm attitude toward the true God. Judah ignored these warnings which lead to the 701 BC, Assyrian army invasion lead by Sennacherib. However, Sennacherib's arrogance and Judah's King Hezekiah's repentance gains God's help and Judah is spared - for another 115 years when Babylon conquers and enslaves the sinful nation.

Isaiah is the most quoted book in the New Testament and is sometimes referred to as 'the little bible.'

A:

Isaiah, son of Amoz, after whom the Book of Isaiah is named, lived in Jerusalem. An anonymous writer, now known as Second Isaiah because of his contribution to part of the Book of Isaiah, lived in Babylon during the Exile. A third author of the Book of Isaiah, therefore known as Third Isaiah, lived in Jerusalem after the Return from Exile.

Isaiah 1:1 introduces the book as the work of Isaiah, son of Amoz, who lived in Judah during the reigns of the Judahite kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, early in the seventh century BCE. The author of this verse makes no claim to live during the time of the Babylonian Exile.

The Book of Isaiah then omits the 150 year period from Hezekiah to the fall of Jerusalem and recommences with the Babylonian Exile. Chapters 40-55 of the Book of Isaiah were written by an anonymous author in Babylon in the middle of the sixth century BCE. The last chapters of what is now the Book of Isaiah were written back in Jerusalem by another anonymous author.

The three different authors of the Book of Isaiah are sometimes known as First Isaiah (I Isaiah), Second Isaiah (II Isaiah) and Third Isaiah (III Isaiah), respectively. It appears that the works of Second Isaiah and Third Isaiah were originally separate books, but were subsequently added to the Book of Isaiah.
