- "Mormonism" began with Adam. The religion of the Old Testament became corrupt over time and Jesus came to this earth to fulfill and restore His church (The New Testament). Then, after the death of Jesus and His apostles, the doctrines and authority were lost again. Jesus Christ brought about a final resoration through Joseph Smith (The Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants). "Mormonism" is simply a nickname. The name of the church is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" because it differentiates them from the ancient.

Mormonism began in the Palmyra/Fayette area of upstate New York, USA in the early 1800's.

"Mormonism" originated in a vision that Joseph Smith Jr. had when he was 14 years old. There was a great religious upheaval in his community, and members of his family were joining different churches. He decided to consult The Bible for guidance as to which church he should join. There he read James 1:5, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him as of God, that giveth to all men liberally..."

Joseph decided to do as the Bible directed and ask of God. He went Into the Woods behind his home to pray to God, and ask which church he should join. Just as he began doing so, he saw a "pillar of light exactly above [his] head" and in that pillar saw "two personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description". These personages introduced themselves as God the Father and Jesus Christ. They directed him to join none of the churches because they had all apostasized from the truth.

Later, Joseph was visited by an angel named Moroni who directed him to where an ancient record was buried in a hill near his home. By the power of God, this record was translated into the Book of Mormon.

Joseph was also visited by numerous Biblical characters such as Moses, Peter, James, and John and received further revelations from Jesus Christ.

After being sufficiently instructed and given authority by these heavenly visitors, Joseph Smith officially organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on April 6, 1830 in Palmyra, New York.

Technically it developed in old days. The days the book was being written. The last writer in that book; the Book of Mormon was Moroni, Mormon's son.

The Mormon faith, a nickname for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was organized in Fayette, New York, on April 6, 1830. On this day, 60 people assembled at the Peter Whitmer home to witness the formal organization of the Church.

The church was founded by Joseph Smith, Jr. Joseph was born in 1805 and spent most of his youth in Palymyra, New York. He was born in a Christian family, whose members were divided in their religious observation, some were Methodist, others Protestant, and still others did not profess an organized religion.

At a young age, Joseph spent a great deal of time pondering and meditating about God and his will for his children. He investigated all of the churches, abundant in his small town, but with each visit only became more confused about the true nature of deity.

One day while studying the bible when Joseph was 14 years old, he read a scripture in James, chapter one, verse five, which reads "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."

Joseph later said of the experience "Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that if any person needed wisdom from God, I did; for how to act I did not know."

Finally, Joseph decided that he might venture an appeal to God. On a spring morning, he entered a grove of trees and knelt to pray and ask God which of the churches he should join.

Joseph later explained what happened while he was praying. He said "I saw a pillar of light, exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. When the light rested, I saw two personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description. One spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other, 'Joseph, this is my Beloved Son. Hear Him."

Joseph said that these personages were God the Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ. They told him to join none of the churches, that they were all in some way corrupted and had lost precious truths from the original church that Christ organized when He was on the earth. They told him to prepare himself, for he would be called as a prophet to restore the original Church of Christ to the earth.

As part of this restoration, Joseph said that he was visited by an angel, who told him of a record of the ancient American people, which had been hidden in a nearby hill. After a few years of preparation, he was to retrieve the record, recorded on plates of gold, and translate it. This he did, publishing it as the Book of Mormon, in 1830, the same year the church was organized.

The church was forced from New York to Kirtland, Ohio, in Januray 1831. After a short time there, some of the members were told to settle in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri in July 1831. Mobs forced the church members out of Jackson County in November 1833. By 1838 the entirety of the church was forced to leave Kirtland, Ohio, and regrouped in Far West, Clay County, Missouri. However, the church was forced in 1839 to flee the state of Missouri, due to an extermination order given by Governor Boggs. They settled in Nauvoo, Illinois, and lived there until 1846.

While living in Nauvoo, mobs set on the life of Joseph Smith arranged for him to be taken to Carthage, Illinois, where he and his brother, Hyrum Smith, were martyred on June 27, 1844.

Finally forced out of Nauvoo in 1846, the church moved west in companies of ox-drawn wagons and handcarts, lead by the second prophet, Brigham Young, and settled in the Salt Lake Valley.

Since then, the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has been headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. The current President of the Church is Thomas S. Monson. Around 53,000 young men and women are seen as missionaries of the church in all parts of the world. 151 temples are currently completed, in construction, or announced. Church membership was last reported in April 2009 as 13,508,509.

Mormons believe that their church is not a new church, but rather a restoration of the ancient Church established by Jesus Christ, after it suffered an apostacy (falling away) following the death of the last apostle.

According to Mormons, the religion was restored in upstate New York. There a teen aged boy was particularly interested in which church to join. He read a particular verse in the Bible (James1:5) which stated "If any man lack wisdom let him ask of God" so the boy (Joseph Smith) set a side a day later on to pray.

When he prayed he saw two personages that slowly descended from heaven and came to rest in front of him, and identified themselves as God the Father and his son Jesus Christ. They also said that he should join none of the existing churches, and that other messengers would come in time to give him further instruction.

Eventually this boy would grow older and, under the instruction of God and angels, establish the Mormon church, aka the LDS Church or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
