The Scripture you are referencing says 'fruit' of the Spirit - singular. Think of the Spirit as a tree with branches of which 9 'characteristics' are labelled.

As a new Christian fully repents and is baptized by emersion, receiving the laying upon of hands from God's Minister and promises to follow our perfect example, Jesus Christ, God the Father begats that individual with His Holy Spirit and he/she becomes a new creature in Christ - developing and not born again. The fruit of the Spirit is what will be needed, along with the full armor of God in this world to overcome temptations of the evil one and his followers - to do God's good works as He wills.

When a person is saved by the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit indwells that person. Some where, possibly in our spirit the Holy Spirit lives. The church is the Body of Christ. Yes there are church buildings but these are mere buildings. Jesus Christ is the HEAD of the church and each saved person is added to the body of believers. Thus the church is indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Colossians 1:18; I Corinthians 6:19; I Corinthians 12:14; 12:27.)
