Joshua took command of the Hebrew people about B.C. 1400 at age 85. In 6 years he had led the army of Israel in conquering the whole land from Mount Halak, at the ascent of Mount Seir on the south, to Bagdad, under Mount Hermon, on the north. He conquered 6 nations with 31 kings including Anakim (Anakim was the race of giants that for years had been a terror to Israel). About B. C. 1394.

The central theme of the book of Joshua is about the Israelites entering and conquering the Promised Land under Joshua's leadership. It emphasizes faithfulness, courage, obedience to God, and the importance of trusting in God's promises.
The first six scrolls (Genesis-Joshua); a theory that the first part of Israel's story ends with the conquering of the promised land.

Joshua
According to Jewish tradition the conquest of Canaan was a very long process. The first blow at the Canaanites was when Joshua conquered vast parts of the land mainly around the Judian and Sumerian Mountains. this took about 14 years. (Some scholars argue the historical credibility of the book of Joshua but see the related link to learn about a major altar discovered on Mount Ebal related to Joshua Chapter 8, 30-35). After this first blow there was a long period in which the Israelites where not able to finish the conquering of the land. Only in the days of King David and his son Salomon some 400-500 years after the conquering had been completed.
In the first conquest of Israel, Joshua was their leader against the Cannenites. It is said Joshua was Moses' aide. Joshua's time period was around 1355-1245 BC. You can learn more in the Old Testament, its sixth book, " Joshua".
Moses led them up to the border of Canaan, and Joshua led them into the land itself (Joshua ch.3-4). See also:More about Moses and Joshua
"To be strong and courageous and to fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
Actually moses does not put his foot in the promised land. It was Joshua who took over from Moses , who lead the people to Canaan.
The land of Israel is referred to in the Bible as the land of milk and honey. After 40 years wandering in the wilderness after leaving Eygpt, Moses brought the nation to the eastern side of the Jordan river. There, 2.5 tribes of the 12 tribes settled. However, Moses was not allowed to enter the land west of the Jordan river which is what is genernally referred to the land of milk and honey. Rather, it was Joshua who was moses' successor the the leader that led the nation in conquering the land.
The biblical genealogies suggest that the military conquest of the Promised Land began around 1400 BCE, the traditionally accepted date. However, archaeologists say that there is no evidence of a military conquest and that the area that would become the Hebrew homeland remained quite sparsely populated until around 1200 BCE, when an gradual and apparently peaceful influx began.
