Americans had almost no exposure to Buddhism until the 1800's. At that time (around 1830) immigrants from China started to arrive. They estabished the first Buddhist temple in San Francisco around 1850. By 1900 there were around 400 temples which were dismissed as heathen sites by the white Americans. When ntry into the US became difficult Korean and Japaese Buddhists came to Hawaii. Japanese Buddhist temples came to Hawaii 1895 and mainland USA in 1890 (together with Buddhist missionaries) followed by a temple in Vancouver B.C. in 1905.
Amercan intellectuals began to take an interest in Buddhism in the middle 1800's. The first known convert to Buddhism was in 1875 (Henry Olcott)
