39 men and women took their own lives in response to their belief that they would catch a ride on a spaceship hiding behind the Hale-Bopp comet. There are several former members who are still alive: Rio, who wrote a book about the group, Sawyer, who runs a Talk Radio blog about their beliefs, two others who continue to operate the group website in support of their beliefs, and some others who participate in the Facebook Heaven's Gate group.
