The aborigines of Australia have a similar situation as the Native Americans in the US. They are given the legal choice of living their traditional lifestyle or living in the European based society in Australia. There is even a choice for Aborigine minors who break the law: be punished by the elders of their tribe(?) or go to jail.
The Aborigine culture is based around the Dreaming, which is a dream world from which everything comes into being. In the Dreaming everything is in motion, which manifests itself in the artwork Australia is famous for in dotted lines. When an object settles down somewhere (or slows down, if I recall) it appears in the world in which we live.
