The laws for the Jews stemmed from the Ten Commandments given to Moses by God for the Israelites. The Ten Commandments were expanded on in Exodus, and Leviticus. Some are seen in Numbers and Deuteronomy.
In Jesus' time and even before, some of the religious leaders made up some man made laws and tried to enforce them up on the people. These were bogus laws and hindered those who tried to follow them.
