A:A notion of original sin had received little attention in the Church until Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430) introduced the concept to the western half of the Christian Church. It was never accepted in the Greek-speaking east and has been largely abandoned by many of the Protestant Churches. Augustine said that original sin resulted directly from the disobedience of Adam and Eve, and believed that it could only be removed by baptism, so without baptism, souls could not go to heaven. On this view, baptised Christians are no longer affected by original sin, but unbaptised persons are and, because of the sin committed by Adam and Eve, will be denied entry into heaven.

Cardinal George Pell recently stated that the story of Adam and Eve is a myth, describing it as a religious story told for religious purposes. Without their existence, it will be hard to sustain the belief that Christians are born with original sin as a consequence of the sin of Adam and Eve, or that without baptism all are condemned to hell. It is too early to predict that the Church will soon abandon the doctrine of original sin, yet Adam and Eve can no longer be blamed for the existence of original sin.

What is the relationship between Baptism and Original Sin?

Original Sin, created by our original parents Adam and Eve occurred when they both ate of the forbidden fruit in Genesis 1 and 2. Baptism forgives the Original Sin, thus 'erasing' it. By erasing the stain of Original Sin, baptism opens the soul to receive the supernatural grace of God given to mankind via the Holy Spirit. Although this is slightly beyond topic: as with all sin, Original Sin is not without its consequences. To give you a parallel, one could commit a murder and be forgiven completely by God but the consequence remains that the victim's family must now go on without the victim. As such, Baptism may forgive the baptized of the sin but the effects of it remain. For Original Sin, there are four effects: darkening of the intellect (mankind doesn't know the fullness of himself or his actions), weakening of the will (mankind is unable to resist all sin), suffering (mankind must suffer), and death (mankind must die).

What is the difference between original sin and personal sin?

Original sin is the concept that through there disobedience toward God, Adam and Eve, took all of humankind out of communion with God and effectively opened the door for man to commit other sins. Generational sin is the concept that my father's sin will carry over to me and I will be held responsible for his actions. Generational sin, responsibility for my father's actions, outside of Original sin, is explicitly rejected in scripture (Ez. 18:17ff). To contrast the two, Original sin is separation from God that has occurred and remains until a person confesses their sins and accepts Jesus Christ's salvation and forgiveness and generational sin is an expression of "Christian Karma" that lacks Scriptural integrity.

Who suffers form original sin?

A:Saint Augustine identified 'original sin' as the consequence of the fall of man, but this was a view never accepted in the Greek-speaking east. It is a particularly Catholic teaching that all are born with original sin, which can only be washed away with baptism, and Protestant Churches give less recognition, if any, to original sin as a reason for baptism. The Orthodox Churches and Jews do not have the concept of original sin.
