God tested Abraham who was told to kill his son Isaac in the name of the lord. In which the angel came down and stopped him at the moment of inserting the dagger in Abraham's son. Thus, he became one of the important figures of the Old Testament and the father of faith.

Also, Job was tested by God. The Book of Job tells the story (some say, based on fact, others say it was an allegorical novel or fiction) of a righteous man who was tested by God after Satan claimed that if God removed all Job's happiness then God would be cursed and Job would follow him instead.

God did indeed test Job to the point of his losing everything. Despite the empty words of encouragement and 'sympathy' Job received from a group of unhelpful, but well-meaning friends, and the urge by his comforters to disown God, Job stood firm in his faith. Eventually everything, and more, was restored to him as a reward for his faithfulness.

The Book of Job, correctly interpreted, is one of the few books of The Bible that tries to unravel the complex causes of suffering in the world.
