This was written shortly after Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed and the people scattered by the Babylonians. In a sense Israel was in a state of death at this time and Ezekiel is predicting a reason for hope, that God would come and rescue His people from this situation. Many of the people at the time hoped that prophecies like this would be fulfilled when the temple was rebuilt, but it doesn't seem like it was. This prophecy is now understood to be a prediction of Spiritual life that the Messiah will bring. Christians understand that when Jesus came, died on the cross and rose again, that all who believe receive this spiritual life, even thought we were all previously spiritually dead in our sin, separated from God. We also believe that one day Jesus will return and the spiritual life that we have been given through Jesus, will be finally and fully consummated and we will live in His perfect Eternal Kingdom with Him forever.
It was a demonstration that the eventual resurrection (Isaiah 26:19) is meant literally, and it was also in order to teach us to never give up hope.
