This doctine is known as the divine right of kings. It asserts that a monarch holds the right to rule because of God's will and that no earthly institution can hold power over that monarch. The monarch is not subject to the will of his/her people or country's laws and only God can judge that monarch's actions. This theory gained traction during the reign of James I of England (1603-1625), though its informal beginnings may have become more acceptable in the public's conscious during the reign of Henry VIII (1509-1547). It is most popularly remembered as the doctrine of Louis XIV of France (1643-1715).
