Answer 1
Two things. Jonah prophesied to the city of Nineveh, that if they didn't repent within forty days time, God would destroy the city. The people of the city repented and so were spared the judgment. Jonah 3:4
Christ illustrates the example of where Jonah was swallowed by a great whale and spent three days and nights in the belly of the well as being a picture, or a sign of what was to come, that Christ would spend three days in the belly of the earth, following his death, and then as God caused Jonah to be cast out alive from the whales belly, that Christ in three days following his death, after being in the belly of the earth , would then be resurected back to life. He would rise from the dead in three days time following his death.
Answer 2
The prophecy of Jonah is an end-time prophecy. Jesus said himself the sign of prophet Jonah pertains to the last adulterous generation. The sign of the prophet is the name of the process by which the entire biblical text will be unsealed, and this would be the last warning from God before the end will come.
Jonah is a prophet called by God to preach the Ninevites for the wickedness. He tells them that Nineveh will be destroyed in 40 days if the people will not repent. But he is considered 'the unwilling prophet' because he refused to accept God's given mission. It is also because the Ninevites were enemies of his people. Instead, he sails to Tarshish in Spain. In punishment, God sent a terrible storm. When the sailors threw Jonah into the sea, God sent a whale to shallow him up. He stayed in the belly for three days and three nights. He prayed sincerely to God for salvation. So God had the whale spit Jonah into dry land. He was given a mission. This time, Jonah obeyed Him. After the Ninevites prayed sincerely for forgiveness and mercy, God save them from destruction. But Jonah became unhappy. He went to stay under the shade of the tree. The next day, God had the worm attack the plant and leave it bare. He taught Jonah a lasson that people are worth more than plants.
Jon 3:4 And Jonah began to enter into the city [of Ninevah] a day's journey, and he cried, and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown".
