There is no single, universal Christian diet. However, there is a Christian way to think about food and eating. In the New Testament (which is the second half of the Bible and is the main text of Christians), Jesus said "Don't worry about what you eat and drink....look at the birds....they don't worry..." (from the book of Matthew). In other words, the exact content of your diet is not of concern to God.Also in the New Testament, the Apostle Paul wrote, "Whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). In other words, God loves us infinitely more than He cares about what we eat or drink. He cares more about the attitude with which we eat than he cares about the exact food we eat.

Some people argue that what's written in the New Testament about food no longer applies because our modern food is "unhealthy." They say, "Back then, it didn't matter what you ate because all of it was healthy." But I disagree. Granted, back then, there wasn't as much junk food. But there was no refrigeration, either, and there were more parasites in the food. And they ate lots of organ meats, eggs, and animal fat, which are loaded with cholesterol. And at times of famine or drought, they had fewer food sources. Less variety can mean less healthy nutrition. In other words, TAKEN AS A WHOLE, the diet of biblical times cannot be said to be absolutely "better" in some way than our food today. Maybe if they had access to our modern practices of pasteurization, refrigeration, and screening for parasites, their food might be arguably "better," but not otherwise. With that said, I think it's important to address WHY we worry so much about food and eating and diet when Jesus said to not worry about it. As a medical doctor, and as an author of a Christian weight loss book ("The Eden Diet," Zondervan, 2009), I have a very strong opinion on this matter. Though some of us have healthy motives (wanting to care for the bodies God gave us), others struggle with control issues that they displace onto food and eating. I was once one of those people having suffered with a compulsive eating disorder. But it's much the same with chronic dieters. They feel that if only they could control what or how much they eat, their lives would be satisfying and they'd finally be happy. Unfortunately, the vast majority find that EVEN WHEN they can control their diets "perfectly," they remain unhappy.Regarding this lingering satisfaction that remains IN SPITE OF so-called "perfect" dietary practices (whatever those are), Christianity would respond this way: "No diet can make you feel right if you feel that you 'lack something.' If you feel empty inside, it's not because of what you do or don't eat. It's because you need a relationship with Jesus Christ. Only He can fill you up, make you well, and fully satisfy you."For more information about Christianity and diet, feel free to enter my name "Rita Hancock MD" into your favorite Internet search engine. I have written books and articles on that subject, as well as on using your Christian faith to overcome emotional eating.
