A government-sponsored religion is one that the government approves of or condones.

For example, if the United States sponsored one religion - let's say Catholicism - then the Catholic church would enjoy freedom from religious persecution and protection by the government. But all other religions would be outlawed or persecuted.

This is the true meaning of "separation of church and state". The United States citizens enjoy freedom of religion, and the U.S. government is forbidden by constitution to form a "state church".

Further, the government is forbidden to interfere with religious beliefs or legislate changes in doctrine taught in the churches of its citizens.

Is the US Government Atheist?

No. It is secular. The Founding Fathers very wisely looked at the history of religion in government and the abuses it causes to the individual. They wanted to insure that there was no state sponsored religion so they set up a government that was free of religious requirements to run for office, make decisions, and to run the government. The influence of religion in government has led to abuses in the past and by stating that the individual has the freedom of religion they set up a system to guarantee that the individual may worship any way they want. This makes the US government secular and guarantees that the people do not have a state sponsored religion.

How did Voltaire influence the US Constitution?

His ideas helped in many ways but most importantly his belief in Religious and freedom from government sponsored religion influenced the 1st Amendment to the Constitution. The 1st Amendment (Bill of Rights) protects citizens from having their government dictate religious practices. To paraphrase the 1st Amendment, the government cannot establish a religion and it cannot prevent citizens from establishing a religion. This became known as the "Establishment Clause".
