Yes, women weren't allowed to act.
Women in the church are there to assist their husbands in their responsibilities. Each religion has a different role for women to play. For example in the Latter Day Saint Church (Mormon) the women are given the responsibility to teach the younger children. They have their own organization called Relief Society in which they look after the needs of each other and when needed those needs of the community. Without the women the church would not be able to function properly, they are an essential part of the church. Though they do not hold the priesthood they share in its blessings. They are the heart and soul of the church family and bare a great responsibility in that great and holy calling.
Because of the diffrerent roles both women and men play, they have different experiences.
They should take leading roles
Overall, there are three large groups of roles in the Church: the clergy, the religious, and the laity. Obviously, most of us fall into the last category. The clergy include all the deacons, priests, and bishops, plus the Pope as a special role as Vicar of Christ on earth. The religious for the most part are service, and the laity have many different specific roles to play. Each person in each of those three has a specific role which God calls him to play in his life in his overall vocation, but the specific role is unique to each individual.
In western nations historically women did the cooking, cleaning, washing and mending of clothes, and house chores. Today the roles women play have very few limitations. They have been heads of state, such as Margaret Thatcher, fire fighters, police officers, and pilots. The US Military discourages women from serving in active combat roles.
