The Name of the street on which Jesus walked is today called Via Dolorosa. Parts of it used to be called Decumanus Maximus, just North of the temple grounds, going from east to west.
Pilate and the Roman Quarters were also just North of the temple grounds, where remains of the Antonio Fortress, Bethesda and the Praetorium can be seen even today.
Jesus was first brought from the temple through the Susa Gate to the Decumanus Maximus and led to the Praetorium. Then, carrying his own cross, went from the Roman Quarters towards the eastern Gate, called then the Sheep Gate, which in it's place today is the Lion's Gate. As he went outside, Simon of Cyrene was just coming out of the Country, and before he entered the gate, the soldiers compelled him to carry the cross, for Jesus was very weak and the slope of Golgotha was steep.
So, up the slope of Golgotha, which base is very near the gate, he walked and Simon followed, carrying his cross.
The direction east is different than many who hold to the traditions, that Jesus was crucified where today the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is located. But the Scriptures clearly refute the Claim of Helen, the mother of Constantine I, that Golgotha was only a hump in the ground, now below the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the following Points. Jesus finial walk in human form to Calvary was approximately said to be about a half mile long.
