The Golden Stool is important to the Ashanti religion because it is believed to house the soul of the Ashanti people. It represents unity, strength, and the authority of the Ashanti monarchy. The stool is considered sacred and its presence symbolizes the cohesion and power of the Ashanti Kingdom.
The Ashanti people are increasingly irreligious. The majority are not affiliated with any religion. The most commonly practiced religion is the Ashanti religion (a traditional religion which seems to be dying slowly but is revived only on major special occasions), followed by Christianity (Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism and Protestantism) and Islam. The Ashanti religion regarded Asase Ya as "Mother Earth," the earth goddess of fertility, the upholder of truth, and the creator Goddess who came to fetch Ashanti people's souls to the otherworld (Planet Jupiter) at the time of death. She was thought of as the nurturer of the earth. Very few believe this today.
