It was the Mormon church. Mormon is a nickname that was given to the church by people, really the faith is Christianity.
Joseph Smith organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly called the "Mormon" church. Church members do not say he 'founded' the Church. They believe that the Church was founded by Jesus Christ, and organized under the direction of Jesus Christ through Joseph Smith.

The Latter-Day Saints (of the last days) are called Mormons because Joseph Smith wrote a book that claims Jesus after death spoke to a man named Mormon and his son Moroni. Smith was killed in 1844 and in 1847, Brigham Young led a group of Mormons from Missouri to Utah.

Who is Joseph smith and mormonism?

Joseph Smith was the person who restored the church. He was the first prophet...but if anybody ever says so, we DO NOT worship him!!!! I know you didn't but...whatever :) Mormonism is a religion, also known as LDS or the actual "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". Joseph Smith is the founder of this religion, Mormons believe that a more accurate than founder would be restorer as he acted as a servant of God to restore the primitive church read about in the bible.
