It is believed some sort of lettering guides or stencils were used by scribes and monks in copying Bibles and religious tracts around, say, the time of Columbus- not so much a labor-saving device but something insuring a legible end product.There is some evidence there were special punctuations and intonations with the various types of Gothic lettering- what we call Old English, in Canada is termed French Gothic and used in religious sites including tombstones.
