The Spanish conquistadors laid claim to what is now the southwestern part of the USA along with what is now known as California. Thus the Spanish names of San Francisco and Los Angeles as examples. They also laid claim and occupied Mexico and most of South America. The socalled Central America is actually part of North America. Many islands in the Caribbean Sea including the largest island in it Cuba was part of Spain's New World colonies. The largest area in South America, Brazil was claimed by Portugal. Spain also claimed Florida.
