The guillotine was used as an instrument of control, death was fast and certain but as applied the Guillotine was also very public. The ruling parties after the French Revolution applied this method as entertainment to the masses for whom they had little respect, at a time of hardship and hunger. It gave the "masses" something to feel that they were watching justice and were a part of the act of appying justice. It is noteworthy that so many of the ruleing group were in their own time brought to the dock and were dispatched by the same instrument they themselves had used for control and to terrorize. The application of the guillotine on Maximillion Robbespierre, was witnessed by the usual sort of mob, but his last moments were described as filled with terror, ashen in appearence, shaking and trembling. So it goes around, and then around again.
