The crozier is a sign that the bishop is a shepherd who guides his flock (people) gently. Popes, however, have never carried a crozier but carry ferula which is a staff topped with a cross. Traditionally, the ferula does not have a corpus on it, but may have other designs such as a lamb.
Modern popes do not bear a crozier (a bent pastoral staff styled after a shepherd's crook), but rather bear the Papal Cross, a staff topped by a crucifix. In other words, it is called a Papal Cross. And they used to carry one called a crozier.
