One interpretation from the traditional Christian point of view is that people do not (and cannot) clean themselves up before coming to Christ. He did his redeeming work while we were sinners, and we come to him as sinners.

To some people this is an offensive part of the Christian faith because people either like to reach God by their own efforts or works or imagine that they are already good enough to meet his standard. Or they may even deny that there is such a thing as sin yet all the while they are falling short of their own standards, let alone God's.

Yet once this hurdle of human pride is overcome this is a great comfort and shows the wonder of God's mercy and grace and love. It also brings light and hope into the darkness of many who sense in a very deep way that they have ruined their lives by their own actions.
