There are Buddhists in many countries, so they speak many languages. The main sutras, or records of oral teachings were written in Sanskrit and Pali, both of which are now dead languages. Much of the originals were translated to Tibetan, and preserved in Tibet for longer than the originals, so many of the words used to describe certain concepts are based on Tibetan. Most of the mantras you are likely to come across are in Sanskrit.

There is no language that you must speak, read or understand to be a Buddhist. Old Buddhist texts are written in the language native to the area of the writer. Since Buddhism originated in Nepal (where Buddha was born) and developed in Asia many texts are written in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Japanese, Chinese etc. Many people study these languages to read the texts. Many modern Buddhist texts are written in, or have been translated to French, German, English etc.
This s very similar to the original Christian texts being written in Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic and translated into modern versions of the languages as well as other modern languages. No one has to speak, read or understand these original tongues to be a practicing Christian.
