the crecesnt moon and the star was a symbol of ottoman empier which was created centuries after Islam first emerged thus it is not an Islamic figure but a country figure. In Islam signs are forbidden for the fear of them being worshiped instead of god (thus idol worship). Muslims today think that the crecent moon is the sign of their religion out of ignorance or misinformation.
