Catholic AnswerThe Vatican's income is mostly from "Peter's Pence" which is an annual collection in every Catholic Church in the world. Operating costs of the Vatican include various curial Dicasteries (Offices or branches of government), and organisms of the Holy See such as their communications outfits, which would include Vatican Radio, and the Holy Father's Apostolic and charitable ministry. Last year they had revenues of 250.18 million euros and expenses of 254.28 million euros for a net loss of 4.1 million euros.

Catholic AnswerAs the Body of Christ, the Church is spiritually wealthy, as She is in possession of Jesus. In material possessions (land, buildings, etc.) one could certainly say that She is rich. In actual income, She is probably the poorest run "business" on the planet. For one thing She builds for ages, when a church is built, it is not just for the current generation but for all the generations that will follow. The Vatican, itself, is thousands of years old, most of the current buildings were built hundreds of years ago. Of course, She is rich, in faith, in people, in everything that really matters for eternity. As far as income is concerned, the church never has enough to meet all its essential needs and necessary work. The Catholic Church annually spends billions on Her many works to help men's temporal welfare, and is hard put to provide for her thousands of missionaries. So, the bottom line answer is that the Catholic Church almost no money on hand that is not committed to helping someone.

How did the wealth of the Catholic Church strengthen its religious and legal powers?

The wealth of the Catholic Church is in its religious powers. It's wealth is in the love of God shown forth daily in the sacraments. Material wealth, if anything, hindered it at times from fulfilling its goals, as various members of the clergy became more concerned with money than with the things of the spirit. Legally, the Church grew encumbered with a great deal of land during the Middle Ages, and the owners of the land controlled the government to an extent. But at this time, nearly everyone in Europe was Catholic anyway, so its primary influence was negative.
