It celebrates Mother Mary be assumed into heaven.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Feast of the Assumption celebrates the doctrine of Mary's entrance into heaven. It is important because it a natural consequence of the Immaculate Conception, the fact that Mary was preserved from all stain of sin, and the corruption of the body after death is a result of that corruption. The Assumption is not grounded in Scripture but in oral tradition, and was not defined as a dogma until 1950, although it has been believed throughout the history of the Church.

I think you mean Ascension.

It is the day when Jesus ascended to Heaven, forty days after the resurrection and ten days before Pentecost.

Hence Ascension Day is the Thursday of the sixth week after Easter.

The feast of the Assumption (actually it is a Solemnity, which is greater than a Feast) is on August 15. Historically it has been called the Natale or Dormitio (Falling-asleep). No one knows if the Blessed Virgin Mary actually died, as she was conceived without original sin by a miracle of God (The Immaculate Conception). As death is a result of sin, we really don't know if she died. All we know is that she ended her life, and was taken up into heaven - Body and Soul. This is the Assumption, in other words, at the end of her life, she was assumed into heaven by God.
