What is the average cost per square foot for building a church?

Tough question, as prices vary greatly from market to market. NYC could be over $400 / ft. but in the south it could be as low as $100 / ft. I would suggest looking at the homes surrounding the proposed church (new construction only). Add about %20 to that number and you should be very close.

Churches are VERY hard to price on a per square foot basis because the composition of the congregation determines in very large part the cost of the facility. If you have an electrician in your flock he might donate the labor to wire the church, then deduct the cost of labor from his taxes as a charitable contribution. If you have members who know how to do Plumbing they might donate the labor to do the finish plumbing. Lots of people know how to paint; you'll get the church painted for the cost of the materials--or less; if you stand up and say "we need 40 gallons of exterior paint and 50 gallons of interior paint, and if you want to donate a gallon go to Home Depot, buy a $25 gift card and throw it in the collection plate next Sunday" you will get a LOT of $25 gift cards. I've seen churches go up for $15/square foot because so much was donated.

It depends what type of church you want to build. Cathedrals take hundreds of years and hundreds of thousands of pounds if not millions. However, if it is just a normal church, then maybe a hundred thousand. Fortunately though, if you don't want to spend money, then you can just rent a school or something like that.
