A church offers many things to many people. The 'role' of an individual is to recognise your acceptance that you are part of that family and not expected to perform any 'role,' but to be part of a family.

Yes, within that family, you may volunteer, or may be asked to participate in helping the family, whether it be as part of a music group or choir, or to identify where your own personal talents may be applied. That could be as a teacher, as a guide, as a nurturer, or any other part that allows you to feel fulfilled.

Identifying what role a church offers in your life becomes important. From an Anglican perspective, the three most common denominators might be:

A church offers a sense of community, where like-minded people gather to share with one another and be part of a greater family.

A church offers nourishment; the spiritual and physical nourishment received from the homily, the nourishment received from the greater family of fellow church-members, from sharing and learning, whether in intimate groups such as Sunday School, or Bible study and other similar opportunities.

And the church offers the spiritual nourishment or feeding, through the Eucharist, where those gathered collectively acknowledge that we are all with sin and we celebrate that are all one, and absolved of our sins, through our acceptance of the bread and wine (transubstantiation), Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

And the church offers celebration. Whatever denomination suits you, the church encourages you to be part of the celebration of discovering God within you, and the exhilaration you experience, when you look into the eyes of the person standing next to you, and you see not a stranger, but your brother.
