Genesis in the Greek means origin and so this book, found in both the Jewish and Christian bibles, is about where we as humans came from. God the Creator who made both the heavens and the earth formed and designed us from the dust of the earth.
So it starts with the creation and ends up with the death of Joseph, Abraham's great grandson, in Egypt at the age of 110 year old.
This book, written by Moses, tells of the promises and covenant God the Creator made with the man Abrahm who with God's help became the father of many nations. Then it follows the line of Isaac his promised son, and the Jacob, Isaac's son. Jacob's name was changed to Israel and so the book then follows the children of Israel.
It is the true story of God's promises to the man Abraham and his children.
The book covers a span of about 2400 years between it's pages.
Chapter 1 records the history of the formation of the earth and life.
Chapter 2 gives more detail about the creation of man and the specific place he occupied in creation
Chapter 3 records how man fell from the perfect state of the preceding chapters into sin and was thus separated from God.
All three chapters have one author and comprise one coherant account of creation and the fall.
Chapter 1 and the first three and a half verses of chapter 2 consist of the first biblical creation story (Genesis 1:1-2:4a), which scholars now attribute to the Priestly Source. When the original text was separated into chapters and verses in the Christian era, verse 4 was clumsily placed.
The remainder of Genesis chapter 2 consists of the second creation story, which scholars now attribute to the Yahwist Source.
Chapter 3 is a continuation of the second creation story and tells the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
