A sacristan is a unisex term. They may be male or female.
Verger is an older English (as in British) term for a sacristan. I have an older dictionary from England which lists a verger as a beadle or one appointed to keep order in Church, or a sacristan. The terms beadle and verger are not in my modern American Catholic dictionary at all.
Usually a person who is called the Sacristan.
Sacristan (s)
A spiritual janitor.
A sacristan is the person who prepares the altar for Mass, making sure that the correct sacred vessels are at the altar, assuring that the cruets are full of water and wine, sufficient hosts are put out, including the large host for the consecration and the various altar cloths are ready. The person may also be responsible for finding replacements if insufficient Mass servers are present or no lector shows up. A sacristan also assures that the candles are lit. In some case, the sacristan will actually lay out the vestments for the priest and help him vest if needed.
The sacristan in our church looks after the vestments, linens, and silverware.

Answer A Cathlolic priest who is a monsignor (an honorary title) wears the same vestments as any priest when celebrating the Eucharist. The colour of a monsignorial cassock is different from that of a priest. There are three levels of monsignor: Chapain: Black cassock with purple trim and purple sash. Honorary Prelate: Black cassock with red trim and purple sash. On formal occasions they wear a purple cassock. They do not wear a pectoral cross or a skull cap as do bishops. Apostolic Protonotary: These dress in the same manner as honorary prelates, but have the option of using a purple cape (trimmed in red) on formal occasions.
