Jesus said that the 'meek will inherit the earth' (Matthew 5:5).
He was quoting from Psalm 37, particularly the thoughts at verses 10,11,29.
We were created from the earth, FOR the earth, and God's original purpose for mankind, was to live in perfection on a perfect earth, forever (Genesis 1:26-31)(Acts 17:26)(Isaiah 45:18)(Psalm 104:5). Adam disobeyed God and lost everlasting life on earth for all his descendants(Genesis 2:9, 17; 3:22-24), who then lived shorter and shorter lives until our day(Genesis 5:5; 11:10-13, 32; 25:7; 35:28; 47:28), but God's original purpose hasn't changed (Isaiah 45:18)(Proverbs 2:20-22). Mankind still has the hope of everlasting life on earth in perfection(John 17:3)(Micah 4:3, 4)(Isaiah 65:21, 22)(Isa. 33:24).
There are those going to heaven, but they are there in a ruling capacity with Christ(Revelation 20:6) and as with all rulers, they must have something to rule OVER. Revelation 5:10 tells us that their rulership will be over the earth; over those who 'come out of the great tribulation' (Revelation 7:9, 14) and survive into God's cleansed earth.(Revelation 21:3-5)

Christians believe that heaven is a place of happiness because people are with God and with everybody they love. Some Christians think there the only ones going to heaven but most of us don't believe that. The Bible says that anyone who loves knows God and is from God - but it doesn't say you have to be a Christain to get to heaven.
